Tencent
corporateTencent (HKG: 0700) operates one of the most diverse AI ecosystems in the world, backed by RMB 85.75 billion in R&D spending in 2025 (a record high). Founded in 1998 by Ma Huateng (Pony Ma), the company's AI efforts were historically split across Tencent AI Lab (founded 2016), ARC Lab (Applied Research Center, directed by Ying Shan), Youtu Lab (computer vision and OCR), XR Vision Labs (3D and extended reality), Robotics X, and Quantum Lab. ARC Lab became one of China's most prolific open-source research groups, releasing the SEED multimodal model family, YOLO-World, Open-MAGVIT2, and LLaMA Pro among 80+ GitHub repositories. In a major March 2026 restructuring, the AI Lab was disbanded and folded into the Hunyuan team under new Chief AI Scientist Yao Shunyu (born 1997, Tsinghua graduate, former OpenAI researcher and core contributor to Operator and Deep Research), who reports directly to President Liu Chiping.
The Hunyuan model family is Tencent's flagship, evolving from closed-source API to a leader in open-weight multimodal models. HunyuanVideo (13B+ parameters, the largest open-source video generation model at launch, 3M+ HuggingFace downloads), Hunyuan3D, and HunyuanImage 3.0 (80B MoE) represent Tencent's generation capabilities. Hunyuan-Turbo-S (560B MoE) was the first ultra-large hybrid Mamba-Transformer model, and Hunyuan-T1 (2025) introduced deep reasoning rivaling DeepSeek R1.
Beyond its own models, Tencent is a major investor in China's AI ecosystem, holding significant stakes in Kuaishou (~17%), MiniMax, Moonshot AI, Baichuan, and Z.ai. Tencent pledged to at least double its RMB 18B AI product development spend in 2026. Hunyuan 3.0 (~30B parameters) is expected April 2026, powering a new WeChat AI agent.
