The first single ML model to replace the entire numerical weather prediction pipeline — ingesting raw observations and producing both global gridded and local station forecasts — beating operational baselines at orders of magnitude less compute. Cambridge-led (Vaughan/Allen, Turner senior author) with Turing Institute, Microsoft Research, and ECMWF support; preprint April 2024, published in Nature March 2025. A Turing team was formed to deploy it, including global-south forecasting.
